Accessibility Resources

Everyone should be able to take advantage of the programs and services provided by American River College. This page offers additional accessibility resources for students with disabilities.

Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS)

American River College is committed to ensuring that all of our students are able to participate in and enjoy all of our benefits, activities, programs, and services.

DSPS provides equal educational opportunity for students with physical, psychological, or learning disabilities. Eligible students receive counseling, support services, and academic accommodations. We encourage students with disabilities to lead active and independent lives by participating in all college programs.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The ADA is a law that was enacted by the US Congress in 1990. The ADA is a comprehensive civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. Disability is defined by the ADA as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity." The determination of whether any particular condition is considered a disability is made on a case-by-case basis. Certain specific conditions are excluded as disabilities, such as current substance abuse and visual impairment that is correctable by prescription lenses.

Service Animals

Any student with a disability who needs a service animal to participate in and benefit from our services, programs, and activities may use a service animal on district and college property.

Office of Civil Rights (OCR)

OCR serves student populations facing discrimination as well as the advocates and institutions promoting systemic solutions to civil rights problems. An important responsibility of OCR is resolving complaints of discrimination. OCR-initiated cases are typically called compliance reviews.

OCR and the American River College work cooperatively together to address and resolve complaints and ensure voluntary compliance with civil rights laws enforced through OCR. For more information, contact American River College's equity officer.
