Los Rios Announces Hybrid Fall 2021 Semester

March 1, 2021

Amazingly, it has been almost a year since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and our shift to remote and online operations. Even in the midst of our busiest days, we should make sure to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate what we have been able to accomplish by working together under extraordinary circumstances.

For several months, planning has been underway for what the fall 2021 semester will look like. Encouragingly, COVID-19 cases in our region are on the decline and vaccinations are being rolled out in our communities. At the same time, we know that it will still be some time until our entire campus communities are eligible for vaccines and it is likely that social distancing requirements will still be in effect in Sacramento County at the start of the 2021-2022 academic year.

Though there are still many questions that will need to be answered in the weeks and months ahead, we are gaining more clarity on some of what to expect for the fall semester.

Fall Instructional Schedule

When it is published online on April 5, the fall 2021 schedule will include a hybrid mixture of both online and on-ground classes (more on-ground classes than this semester, but substantially fewer than usual). Expanded on-ground offerings will include 22 "Impossible to Convert" Career Education programs (programs that have been almost entirely in hibernation for the past year), as well as a small number of additional exceptions where classrooms allow for maintaining social distancing while not reducing course access for students. If there are substantial changes to regional public health conditions in the weeks leading up to the start of the semester, then we will reassess and make adjustments as necessary.

Fall Student Services and Business Operations

With the publish date of our fall schedule rapidly approaching, there is an immediate need to identify a plan for how classes will be taught in the fall. We still have more time, however, to assess ongoing public health conditions before making decisions about in-person student services and business functions for this fall.

Fall Enrollment Timeline

Fall class schedules will be posted on April 5, and Priority Enrollment will begin as originally scheduled on April 19. The fall semester begins August 21.

As a reminder, information about our reopening planning, the Reopening report, source materials, existing program safety plans, and an always-growing list of frequently asked questions, can be found on our website: Planning a Safe Return to American River College. We will continue to update this page as new information is available and will continue to communicate with you all directly as well.

Thank you, as always, for your patience, commitment, and creativity in these uncertain times.

Sincerely,
