California law (Assembly Bill 705) essentially eliminated the use of assessment tests for purposes of determining the placement of students into transfer-level math and English courses in community colleges. For more information, please go to the Placement and Assessment Services home page.

Placement for Recent High School Graduates

Students who graduated from a US high school 10 years ago or less will be placed into an  English and/or math class based on their high school academic information provided on their application. Placements will be listed in eServices. (See How to Get Your Placement Results). If you don’t see your placement, or if you believe the high school information you submitted is not accurate, please choose from the following:

  • Students planning to return after an absence should submit a new application, wait one day, and check their eServices account for a placement.
  • Currently enrolled ARC students should submit a Placement Re-Evaluation Petition (PREP) to Placement and Assessment Services at assessment@arc.losrios.edu. Please see the information concerning our Placement Re-Evaluation Petition (PREP) process.

If English is not your first language and you would prefer to take English as a Second Language courses, please visit the English as a Second Language (ESL) Remote Assessment page.

Non-GPA Guided Self-Placement

Available for the following:

  • Students who graduated from high school more than 10 years ago
  • Students who have foreign transcripts 
  • Students who left high school without graduating

You have the opportunity to be placed into an English and math course based upon your experience through a new Guided Self-placement process. This process will help you identify the course(s) most appropriate for you based on a series of easy questions about yourself and your academic goals.   

If you are eligible, please check your  Los Rios Gmail account for an email called "How to Get Your English and Math Course Placements", containing a link to Guided Self-Placement. If you have not received that email, you can call Placement and Assessment Services at (916) 484-8423 or send an email to assessment@arc.losrios.edu to request the link.

Note: If you take the Guided Self-Placement but are not eligible, your results will not transfer to your eServices account. If you graduated from a U.S. high school within the last 10 years, please see Placement for Recent High School Graduates.
