American River College is home to the only Biotechnology program in the Sacramento area and offers both a Biotechnology A.S. degree and a Biotechnology Certificate. The Biotechnology program prepares students for transfer to university and entry-level work in the bioscience industry in the areas of research and development, production, clinical testing, quality control, and diagnostic work. Students will learn underlying principles of biotechnology as well as current applications in areas such as agriculture, medicine, forensics, diagnostics, and biomanufacturing.
Our program provides an in depth focus on Cell and Molecular Biology concepts and laboratory skills that are not represented in other Biology courses. This information allows students to better compete when transferring to universities and in the job market. In addition, these laboratory and data analysis skills are applicable to many fields, both within and outside the Biotechnology industry. Students will become familiar with the Biotechnology industry, including it's impact on society and health, company organization, biomedical product development, and quality assurance. Emphasis is also placed on teaching critical thinking and communication skills necessary for success in the workforce. While laboratory courses are taught in person, other courses such as Introduction to Bioinformatics, are offered online to increase access.
Our Biotechnology A.S. Degree provides the theory and skills necessary for entry into the biotechnology field, which uses cellular and molecular processes for industry or research. Course work includes practical laboratory skills with emphasis on good laboratory practice, quality control, and regulatory issues in the biotechnology workplace. Completion of the degree also prepares the student for transfer at the upper division level to academic programs involving biotechnology.
Our Biotechnology Certificate provides the theory and skills necessary for entry into the biotechnology field, which uses cellular and molecular biology processes for industry or research. Course work includes practical laboratory skills with emphasis on good laboratory practice, quality control, and regulatory issues in the biotechnology workplace. This certificate is suitable for preparing the student for the biotechnology workplace at the support personnel level.
