History & Mission

Our Vision

To be and be recognized for offering one of the most forward-thinking and comprehensive gerontology programs in the nation.

Our Mission

To place the needs of our students first by offering gerontology coursework that provides scaffolding to build literacy and language skills in learners of diverse backgrounds, integrates universal design to accommodate learning and ability differences, utilizes a broad array of instructional methods to engage students with various learning styles, and employs time-efficient and flexible homework strategies to meet the needs of working students and students with dependents.

Our Goals

To improve the quality of life and aging outcomes of older people wherever our graduates find employment by providing our students with gerontological knowledge and a gerontological perspective and by facilitating the development of the communication skills required to collaborate effectively and obtain positions with upward mobility.

About the Program

The ARC gerontology program is one of the oldest programs in the nation and it has always been a trendsetter. In keeping with that reputation, in August of 2018, our program became the first nationally accredited community college gerontology program in the nation. Since then, we have worked diligently to expand the program to encompass the full scope of gerontological practice, which is to support and optimize the health and psychosocial wellness of all people over age 55. Likewise, we have expanded our program curricula to prepare students for employment in the field of aging, which provides a broad array of employment opportunities, and designed transfer pathways into Sacramento State University.
