Head Coach

Mark Giorgi

Coach Mark Giorgi is entering his 16th season as Head Coach at American River College. During his tenure with the Beavers, he has helped the players bring home four Big-8 conference championships, five CCCAA Sweet-Sixteen appearances, two Elite-Eight appearances, and one hard fought CCCAA State Championship Runner-Up, in 2004. Coach Giorgi’s teams are known for hard-nosed man-to-man defense, being ranked in the Top-10 nine times since 1998. Additionally, Coach Giorgi’s matriculation rate contiunues to be one of the best in the area as he has helped nearly 50 ARC players move on to the four-year level, and over 65 of his players have moved up to the university and professional levels since his coaching debut in 1991.

Mark is a Northern California native, graduating from Healdsburg High School in 1986, where he played three years at the Varsity level, being named to the All-Nor Cal team his senior year. He went on to play at nearby Santa Rosa Junior College and was named a CCCAA All-State player in 1988. He continued his basketball career by accepting a full-ride scholarship to the University of Tulsa, where he earned the title of Team Captain his senior season. After graduated from UT with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, Mark proceeded to get his Masters of Arts in Physical Education and Coaching at St. Mary’s College in Moraga.

In 1994, Coach Giorgi also spent six months in Nice, France as a player/coach for the French National Baseball Team. He currently resides in Roseville with his wife of 13-years, Marnie, their son Jase and daughter Jonna.

Assistant Coaches

Bill Benford


Coach Bill Benford is entering his third season as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at American River College. Between club and high school levels, Benford owns 12 years of cumulative coaching experience. In his two years on the ARC staff, the Beavers win total has improved each year, including a trip to the post season in 2013. His primary responsibilities include on-court coaching, working with the perimeter players, player development, recruiting and scouting. He is also involved with the program’s off-season strength and conditioning program.

Before joining the ARC staff, Coach Benford was the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Christian Brothers High School (2008-11).  While at CB, Benford’s team made it to the post season each of the three years and competed for a section championship during the 2008-09 season.

Benford is an alumnus of American River College, playing for head coach Hub Morphew.  While playing for the Beavers, Benford was a contributor that saw time off the bench as a freshman point guard and was part of a team that made it to the playoffs that year.  During his sophomore year, he helped lead his team to a conference championship in the Bay Valley Conference with a 13-1 record and a 23-8 overall record and a birth in the playoffs.

Bill completed a Bachelor of Science in Management from University of Phoenix and has also added a Master of Arts in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.  He currently resides in Sacramento with his wife Holly and their children Makaila, Elijah, and Isaiah.  


Tristan Hopson


Coach Triston Hopson is entering his fifth season as an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at American River College.  His responsibilities include post player development, practice and game management duties and other basketball operation aspects.

Coach Hopson played two years for the Shasta College Knights and was a member of the 2005-2006 GVC League Champions, helping the team make a CCCAA sweet-sixteen appearance. 

After graduating from Shasta College, Triston transferred to CSU Sacramento where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts History and received a Secondary Social Science Teaching Credential.  He hopes to pursue a Masters in Athletic Administration and obtain a head coaching position at the university level.


Michael Lorente


Coach Lorente

Coach Michael Lorente is entering his first year as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at American River College. With over 12 years of experience between club, high school, and community college, Coach Lorente is tasked with on-floor coaching, practice and game management duties, player development, scouting and recruiting. Coach Mike also serves as administrative coordinator for basketball operations and information.

Prior to joining the ARC coaching staff, Coach Lorente spent two seasons at Cosumnes River College, where he assisted with strength and conditioning, player development and on-floor coaching. During the 2009-2010 season, he helped the Hawks win 22 games and make a CCCAA sweet-sixteen appearance. He helped recruit, develop, and advance All-State players and NCAA Division I transfers Charles Standifer (UC Riverside), Josh McCarver (CSU Sacramento/France Pro Leagues), Anthony Johnson (East Tennessee State/Canada Pro Leagues), Jamelle Barrett (European Pro Leagues), and Gabriel Strong. Additionally, Coach Lorente has served as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Rocklin High School (2010-2012) and as an Assistant Coach at Capital Christian (2004-2007). He also has coached with many area AAU clubs including CAL Elite, NorCal Elite, and YBA. Annually, Michael directs the legendary Dimes Classic Men’s Basketball Tournament (2005-current) and continues to work with many area camps and clinics.

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Michael played his ball at Oakland Christian High School, Olivet College, and enjoyed a brief stint with the semi-professional team, the Detroit Dogs. He is a proud alumnus of CSU Sacramento where he holds a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Administration and is pursuing a Master of Arts in Kinesiology at Fresno Pacific University. He currently resides in Sacramento with his fiancé Andrea and their first son, Santino.
